Acid Etch Inspection


Citric Acid Passivation

X-R-I Testing offers a wide variety of acid etch inspection cleaning and chemical processes controlled under our AS9100 and Nadcap certifications. Processes include Ultrasonic cleaning, vapor degreasing, nitric acid passivation, citric acid passivation, pre-penetrant etch, humidity testing, and copper sulfate testing. Our clean, efficient facility is designed specifically for the processing of aerospace components.

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Process
  • Used in conjunction with solvents or alkaline cleaner to loosen or remove contaminants from deep recesses and other difficult to reach areas
Thickness
  • No dimensional change

Alkaline used to remove oily, semi-solid, and solid contaminants from metals. Performed at elevated temperatures.Parts immersed in solvent at or slightly above room temperature unless otherwise specified

Vapor Degreasing

Process
  • Used on extremely soiled parts
Thickness
  • No dimensional change

Hot vapors of a non-chlorinated holgenated solvent removes grease, oils, and waxes

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Process
  • Used in conjunction with solvents or alkaline cleaner to loosen or remove contaminants from deep recesses and other difficult to reach areas

Citric Acid Passivation

Process
  • Improves corrosion resistance of stainless steels

Low concentrations of citric acid at various temperatures

Nitric Acid Passivation

Process
  • Process to improve the corrosion resistance of austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and precipitation hardening stainless steels
Thickness
  • No dimensional change

Various concentrations and temperature ranges of Nitric Acid with or without additives

Pre-Penetrant Etch

Process
  • Surface removal of the part to reveal grain structure for penetrant inspection
Thickness
  • 0.0001"-0.0002" stock loss

Acidic or Caustic solution at varying temperatures. Part may be immersed, sprayed, or swabbed with etchant.

Humidity Testing

Process
  • Environmental Testing
Thickness
  • No dimensional loss

Typically conducted for 24-26 hours at 99% relative humidity. May also be used for passivation verification.

Copper Sulfate Testing

Thickness
  • No dimensional loss
